The Unspoken Rules of Running

It's official. Marathon and half marathon training has begun in Houston. Bright and early Saturday morning, I loved seeing all of the runners and different running clubs up and at 'em! I started with a few early miles before meeting up with my club, Runner's High. The Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half are mid-January, so come August running clubs are in full force. Fall races are actually doable in Houston since summer races aren't really reasonable unless you're traveling preferably up north.

With all the runner's taking over the sidewalks, I thought I'd just talk about some of the unspoken {yet very assumed} rules of running. {Which I am very aware the my running group needs to work on as well! Ooops!}





Don't be a trail/road/sidewalk hog. There are others around you. If you're running in a group, don't run more than 2-3 abreast depending on the width and popularity of the path!


Run to the right. Pass on the left. It's just like driving a car. It drives me nuts to have to weave around runners that are coming straight at me or running in the middle of the path!


When running on the road, run on the left towards oncoming traffic. This way, you can see the cars coming and know that they see you. You don't want to be startled by a car coming up behind you, or worse, startle the car!


Don't be shy. Wave to other runners or say hello. Eye contact or a head nod can do the trick. We all out there and in this together!


Follow the traffic signs and signals. Don't run into traffic. Yield to cars {they're bigger than you}. Sounds self explanatory, but it's easier than you think to nearly dash out in front of a car. Keep your eyes open!


Have fun! You're probably out there because you love it, so keep at it.
